summary

Introduction. The development of the metanephros, mesonephros and gonad is strictly related one to another. Their normal development depends on proper formation of arterial supply. In available literature there is some differences in opinions about formation of arterial supply to the metanephros.
The aim of the study. The aim of the study is to evaluate the external renal blood supply during embryonic period, establish the time of formation of the proper renal artery and determine the level of renal artery during changes in the location of the kidney.
Material and methods. Study was made on 55 human embryos in developmental stages from 13 to 23. Age of embryos was established according to international criteria for developmental stages. All embryos were embedded in paraplast and sectioned serially in 3 planes. Sections were stained according to routine histological methods.
Results. In stages 13 and 14, metanephros, gonads and mesonephros are supplied by common urogenital vascular net, formed by arteries from the aorta. In stages from 15 to 20 metanephros is additionally supplied by small arteries from the aorta. In stages 21 and 22 suprarenal arteries play a role in formation of the urogenital vascular net. In these stages the proper renal artery is finally observed. In stage 23 the urogenital vascular net is reduced in function and supply only mesonephros and gonad. At that time metanephros and suprarenal gland have their own arteries.
Conclusion. Till the end of the 7th week of embryonic period, metanephros is supplied by urogenital vascular net, Small direct arteries from the aorta to the metanephros are also observed in that time. From the beginning of the 8th week metanephros is supplied by the renal artery. The renal artery which goes to the hilum of the metanephros is one of the upper mesonephric arteries which primarily supplies both metanephros and mesonephros. After the involution of the mesonephros it supplies only metanephros.
