summary

Introduction. The study of Medical Therapy of Prostatic Symptoms (MTOPS) indicated better efficiency of alpha blocker(doxazosine) and finasteride pharmacotherapy of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH). The preliminary results of study of 3 months tamsulosine monotherapy and subsequent 12 months of pharmacotherapy with finasteride were published in 2003 years.
Objectives. Assessment of efficiency of tamsulosine and finasteride combined pharmacotherapy after 3 years.
Materials and methods. The pharmacotherapy was done in 33 patients (from 60 to 70 years of age) with BPH during 12 months and next 2 years on the 32 patients because one patient died (heart failure). During the first 3 months the patients received only tamsulosine. During the study: symptoms severity (questionnare IPSS); quality of life (QoL); rate of maximum urine flow (Qmax); mictiurition time (TF) and volume of the prostate (PV) and residual urine (PU) measured by ultrasonography were examined.
Results. The results received after 3 years of pharmacotherapy were better than 3 months of tamsulosine monotherapy. An improvement was obtained in all examined parameters and they were better up to: IPSS - 15%; QoL - 24%; Qmax - 8 %; TF-25%; RU - 15,3%; and PV - 28%.
Conclusions. Assessment of efficiency of combined therapy (tamsulosine and finasteride) of patients with BPH lasting for 3 years revealed that it was more efficient in comparison to tamsulosine monotherapy.
