summary
- Introduction. The study of Medical Therapy of Prostatic Symptoms (MTOPS) indicated better efficiency of alpha blocker(doxazosine) and finasteride pharmacotherapy of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH). The preliminary results of study of 3 months tamsulosine monotherapy and subsequent 12 months of pharmacotherapy with finasteride were published in 2003 years.
- Objectives. Assessment of efficiency of tamsulosine and finasteride combined pharmacotherapy after 3 years.
- Materials and methods. The pharmacotherapy was done in 33 patients (from 60 to 70 years of age) with BPH during 12 months and next 2 years on the 32 patients because one patient died (heart failure). During the first 3 months the patients received only tamsulosine. During the study: symptoms severity (questionnare IPSS); quality of life (QoL); rate of maximum urine flow (Qmax); mictiurition time (TF) and volume of the prostate (PV) and residual urine (PU) measured by ultrasonography were examined.
- Results. The results received after 3 years of pharmacotherapy were better than 3 months of tamsulosine monotherapy. An improvement was obtained in all examined parameters and they were better up to: IPSS - 15%; QoL - 24%; Qmax - 8 %; TF-25%; RU - 15,3%; and PV - 28%.
- Conclusions. Assessment of efficiency of combined therapy (tamsulosine and finasteride) of patients with BPH lasting for 3 years revealed that it was more efficient in comparison to tamsulosine monotherapy.
