INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

1. Aim of the journal

Central European Journal of Urology (CEJU) (formerly Polish Journal of Urology / Urologia Polska) is the official, quarterly review of the Polish Urological Association (PUA). The Journal provides a forum for the presentation of original clinical, experimental and other research studies in the field of urology, as well as opinions and commentaries written by experienced urologists.

Authors submitting a paper or other material for publication in the Central European Journal of Urology are deemed to warrant the originality and proprietorship of the material, and to express consent to its publication. Copyright in papers or other material submitted and qualified for publication becomes the sole property of the PUA Editorial Office and may not be published in whole or part in other journals or digital media without obtaining the prior written consent of Editor in Chief, which will not be unreasonably withheld. Central European Journal of Urology considers the following texts for publication (written only in English):

  • original clinical and experimental studies
  • short communications and case reports
  • review papers
  • commentaries and Letters to the Editor (LTEs)

2. Ethical consideration

Papers describing animal experiments can be accepted for publication only if the experiment conforms to the legal requirements in Poland as well as with the European Communities Council Directive of November 24, 1986 or the National Institute of Health Guide (National Institute of Health Publications No. 80-23, Revised 1978) for the care and use of Laboratory Animals for experimental procedures. Authors must provide complete descriptions of their anesthetics and surgical procedures. Papers describing experiments on human subjects must include a statement that experiments were performed with the understanding and consent of each subject, with the approval of the appropriate local ethics committee.

3. Legal aspects

In sending the manuscript the author(s) confirm(s) that (s)he has (they have) not previously submitted it to another journal (except for abstracts of no more than 250 words) or published it elsewhere. The author(s) also agree(s), if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication, to automatic and free transfer of copyright to the Publisher allowing for the publication and distribution of the material submitted in all available forms and fields of exploitation. The author(s) accept(s) that the manuscript will not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the copyright holder, i.e. the Publisher. Appropriate Transfer of Copyright Agreement form is available online and will be also sent with page proof to corresponding author.

All manuscripts submitted should be accompanied by a covering letter including signed confirmation of the above and confirming that this publication has been approved by all co-authors (if any), as well as by the responsible authorities at the institution where the work has been carried out. Generally no more than six authors should be listed (except multicenter studies). All authors must sign the Authors Guarantee Form (available online) and send to Editors with the manuscript. Materials previously published should be accompanied by written consent for reprinting from the relevant Publishers. In the case of photographs of identifiable persons, their written consent should also be provided. Any potential conflict of interest will be dealt with by the local court specific to the Publisher. Legal relations between the Publisher and the author(s) are in accordance with Polish law and with international conventions binding on Poland.

4. Submission of manuscripts

The manuscripts should be sent by electronic mail to the address of the Editorial Office: augustyn@ptu.net.pl. In the near future an Online Submission System will be available and all manuscripts will have to be submitted online only.

5. Manuscripts preparation

The maximum size of papers (excluding abstracts, tables, figures, photographs and references) are:

  • original clinical and experimental studies should not exceed 3000 words and 40 references
  • short clinical communications (case reports), should not exceed 1500 words and 10 references
  • comments and letters to the Editor should not exceed 1000 words
  • review papers - 5000 words and 70 references

6. Manuscript structure

Manuscripts should follow the style of the Vancouver agreement detailed in the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals as presented in JAMA 1997; 277: 927-34 [www.acponline.org/journals/annals/01jan97/unifreqr.htm].

  • First page

    title, first names (full) and surnames of the Authors and detailed affiliation(s) in which the study was conducted. The Author/Authors include the proposal of publication category (clinical study, review, etc). The first page should also contain a Short Title of the paper and detailed address for correspondence. The Editorial Board kindly requests Authors to specify the number of words contained in the main body of the paper.

  • Key words according to MeSH: 3-5 key words listed on the first page
  • Abstract

    of the paper for reviews and original study reports - 200 to 250 words. The abstract must consist of the introduction, material and methods, results and conclusions. For short clinical communications (case reports) - abstract of 100 words maximum, containing all important elements of the paper.

  • Full text

    of the paper for original clinical and experimental studies must be divided into the following parts: introduction, material and methods, results, discussion and conclusions.

  • Acknowledgements

    at the Author's / Authors' discretion: for institutions, colleagues, information about financial grants and other financial relationships with pharmaceutical companies or institutions

  • References

    The list of references cited in the text of the paper according to the Vancouver system, contained on a separate sheet. Each reference in the text of the paper should be numbered with Arabic numerals in the order of their appearance in the text, marked in the texts with the numbers in brackets. The names of all Authors should be listed, if their number does not exceed six; for citations having seven or more authors, the names of the first three should be cited, followed by et all. Abbreviated titles of the journals cited should be consistent with their forms in Index Medicus (see also: International Committee of Medical Journal Editors: Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals.     • Tables, figures and illustrations:

      Tables should be numbered with Arabic numerals in the order consistent with their appearance in the text, submitted on separate pages with description above the table. Figures and illustrations should also be numbered with Arabic numerals in the order of their appearance in the text. Descriptions of figures or photographs should be submitted listed on a separate sheet. The desired position of the figures and tables in the text should be indicated in the left margin. When possible, group several illustrations on one block for reproduction; figures and photographs should be attached as separate printouts (in the electronic version, as separate files); figures should be saved in one of the following formats: .cdr, .tif, .jpg, .ai, .bmp or .eps. Photographs sent in the electronic form should be of the resolution of 300 dpi and in .tif or .jpg format. Do not place figures and photographs in MS Office files. Like all other figures, block should be prepared within a rectangular frame to fit within a single or double column width of 84 and 174 mm, respectively, and a maximum page height of 226 mm. Each figure should include scale magnification bar; do not use magnification factors in the figure legends. All figures, whether photographs, graphs or diagrams, should be numbered consecutively throughout. Do not give explanations on a back of illustrations. Only good drawings and original photographs can be accepted; negatives, photocopies or xerocopies cannot be used. Illustrations can be printed in colour providing that the Author contributes to the additional publication costs.

Each paper should be accompanied by the following statement: I/we hereby declare that the paper: (title) has neither been published elsewhere, nor submitted for print in another journal. Mailing and e-mail address and telephone or fax number of the first Author's institution should be given.

In case of publication by the Authors of any material previously published elsewhere, they are responsible for obtaining written consent from the publisher to reprint them in the Central European Journal of Urology.

Papers previously published or submitted for print in another journal may be submitted for print in the Polish Journal of Urology, provided that the Author obtains a formal consent in writing from the publisher of the journal concerned.

7. Guidelines of the Editorial Board

  • Only SI system units should be used in the texts. Authors may use commonly accepted abbreviations in the texts of the papers, but the first use of an abbreviation must be preceded by an explanation.

  • Papers submitted will be evaluated by the Editor and in case of positive evaluation anonymously by at least two external Reviewers who will not be informed of the identities of the Authors and their affiliations. The information about acceptance should be limited to 4 weeks. The Editorial Office will forward the Reviewers' comments to the Authors by electronic mail with a request to return the revised manuscript at their earliest convenience.

  • The Authors will receive proofs of the paper in Acrobat PDF format, which should be sent back after corrections to the Editorial Office as soon as possible (within 48 hours). The corrections should be limited to a minimum. Substantial modifications at this stage will only be possible at the Authors' expense.

  • The Authors may order reprints of their paper, which are chargeable reprints of the paper. The order, stating the number of copies required, should be enclosed with the corrected proofs sent back to the Editorial Office.
