summary

Introduction.

The treatment of urethral strictures among boys is controversial subject because of many various treatment options. Most of the literature refers to adult patients.

The aim of the study

was to compare and estimate the effectiveness of urethral strictures treatment in boys on the ground of self experience regarding reasons, methods and results of the treatment.

Material and method.

18 cases of urethral strictures treated in Children’s Surgery and Urology Department in Wroclaw were analysed. There were different methods of treatment applied: calibration, urethrotomy, laserotherapy and urethroplasty.

Results.

In follow-up examinations, which took place after finishing treatment from 6 to 12 months, in 12 cases the laserotherapy treatment was successful and the regression of symptoms was noticed. Two patients didn’t apply for examinations and in 3 boys the treatment was unsuccessful. After next 2 years of follow up in 11 cases excellent results of treatment were still present. The most effective treatment was laserotherapy (56%).

Conclusions.

The described method of urethral strictures treatment – laserotherapy – is suc-cessful in case of short segmental urethral strictures (<10 mm). The urethroplasty treatment is indicated in case of complete or long segmental urethral strictures (>15-20 mm). The calibration gives only temporary results. To get long-lasting result the other methods of urethral strictures treatment should be chosen.
