summary

Introduction. Growing number of prostate cancer detection is associated connected with biochemical development (PSA antigen) and growing possibilities of diagnostic imaging technologies. Correct assessment of the prostate cancer local stage is essential for choosing the best therapy.

The aim of the study. The aim of the study is to compare the diagnostic accurancy of transrectal ultrasound and MRI exam in prostate cancer detection based on our own material.

Material and method. 42 patients with prostate cancer were diagnosed in Oncology Institute in Cracow in 2005. All patients were examined by TRUS and MRI of the pelvis. According to these exams stage of prostate cancer was estimated (using TNM classification). The main role was to asses the T value. Then we have compared the results of the two exams.

Results. 12 patients were qualified to radical surgery. The remaining group was treated by radiotherapy. In operated patients the results of both exams were compatible in 83.3% (11 from 12 patients), in radiated patients only in 66.6 % (in 20 patients from the group of 30).

Conclusions. 1. Analysis of the material shows that in operated patients agreement between TRUS and histopathology exam and MR and histopathology exam is equal and appears in 83%. 2. Using both examinations (TRUS and MRI) before radical treatment allows for precise choosing the correct therapy metod (surgery or radiotherapy).
