- TESTICULAR PROSTHESES - APPLICATION AND CLINICAL EVALUATION
- SUMMARY
- Introduction: Implantation of testicular prosthesis is most often performed in patients treated because of congenital agenesis of testes, testes hypoplasia, after amputation of a testis and in female to male transsexuals.
- Material and methods: In the years 1989-1999, 25 patients were operated in the Department of Plastic Surgery of the Medical University of £ód¼. Fourteen patients had unilateral or bilateral hypoplasia or congenital agenesis of testis. One patient had a testis amputated because of leukemic infiltration. Implantations of testicular prostheses were also performed in 9 female to male transsexuals, in whom construction of penis and scrotum was done earlier. In one patient treated because of hermaphroditism a similar procedure was implemented. Implantation of 2 prosthesis was performed in 13 patients while in 12 cases 1 prosthesis was implanted.
- Results: In 22 patients (88%), beside little swelling and mild pain in the operated area, no complications were observed. In 2 cases (8%) hematoma in scrotum developed. Testicular prosthesis had to be removed in 1 patient on the 6th day following the operation, because of infection, opening the wound and exposure of the implants.
- Conclusion. Procedure of implantation of testicular prosthesis is relatively simpic, with low risk of complications and effective in achieving aesthetic goals.
