summary

introduction and objectives
Wide spread use of PSA has among others led to increased incidence of prostate cancer and to increased number of men with organ confined prostate cancer who could be treated radically. The aim of the study is to evaluate the prevalence of radical prostatectomy in Poland and its changes between 1999 and 2003.
material and method
The questionnaires considering the activity of respective wards in Poland were analysed. Epidemiological data in Poland associated with prostate cancer were also used in the study.
results
Numbers of men with prostate cancer who could be radically treated gradually rose from 1999 to 2003. In 1999, 395 radical prostatectomies (PR) were performed and 547 men were referred to radiotherapy (it does not mean that all these men were actually treated) and in 2003 these numbers were 1.341 and 1.554 respectively. Numbers of men subjected to radical prostatectomies differed among various provinces: the highest number noted in one of them in 1999 was 89 whereas in 2003 more then 100 RP was done in more then 10 provinces.
conclusions
Numbers of men with prostate cancer treated radically gradually increased in Poland. Popularity of radical prostatectomy is also improving, however differs among various provinces. Numbers of men who were subjected to RP in 1999 and in 2003 were equal to 10% of men with prostate cancer diagnosed in 1999 and 25% of men with prostate cancer diagnosed in 2003.
