kidney renal tumor ultrasound examination in urology ultrasound contrast agents

summary

Introduction. Grey scale ultrasound (GS-US) is not able to finally differentiate focal renal lesions. Although there are some features characteristic for particular pathology, lesions detected on GS-US still need further investigations. Vasculature is an important point characterizing renal tumor in imaging methods. Introduction of ultrasound contrast agents (UCA) caused many studies to estimate diagnostic usefulness of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in renal tumors diagnostics.
The aim of the study. The aim of this study is to demonstrate possibilities of CEUS in diagnostics of renal tumors.
Methods. The cited data were obtained from both original and review papers published in the urological and imaging descriptions.
Conclusions. In the literature CEUS has been reported as a useful method in diagnostics of pseudotumors and complicated cysts. At present there are no enhancement patterns of particular solid tumors after UCA administration although there are some premises to
differentiate among the tumors based on both GS and CEUS images. More authors suggest that CEUS won’t be able to differentiate among benign neoplasm (onkocytoma, angiomyolipoma) and malignant tumors. Method is useful in postoperative follow up and in monitoring effects of minimally invasive treatment (cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation) and response to chemotherapy.
