Surgical resection of brain metastases from renal cell carcinoma

summary

Of 720 patients (pts) with brain metastases (BMET) who were operated on in Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center between 1973-93, 50 pts. (7%) had tumors of renal origin. The
mean age of these patients was 58 yrs, ratio males/females = 38/12. Forty seven pts had the
kidney primary resected. The median interval between diagnosis of renal carcinoma and BMET
was 17 mos (mean 39 mos) and 10 pts were diagnosed synchronously. In all 50 pts, the overall
median survival (MS) from diagnosis of primary was 31,4 mos. and from BMET resection was
12,6 mos. Only 6 pts (12%) were alive at the end of study. In pts with primary in left kidney
