summary

The research covered 20 patients. 17 of them were diagnosed with transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter, 2 with a polyp, and 1 female patient with endometriosis. The hematuria and/ /or flank pain were reported to be the dominant symptoms. X-ray test showed the filling defects of the ureter together with ureteral obstruction in all patients, but did not clearly define the character of that obstruction. USG confirmed the carcinoma with 85% of the patients. Ureteroscopy and biopsy permitted to set the histopathological diagnosis before the operation in all patients who were tested this way. In 11 cases nephroureterorectomy was performed, in this number one patient with the benign tumour was included because of the lack of microscopic diagnosing before the operation. Partial resection of the ureter including the tumour was possible in 3 cases with the non-invasive tumour of ureter of low malignancy, where the character of the tumour was established before the operation and in cases of endometriosis. With 3 other cases the tumour of ureter of the Solitary kidney, tumour of the contralateral kidney and chronic renal insufficiency were the justifications for renal sparing procedure. Ureteroscopy and biopsy should be performed at each patient with ureteral tumour. Diagnosing of the ureteral tomour during the ureteroscopy and defining of its histopathological character before the operation permit selection of the correct method of treatment, especially of the operation aimed at renal sparing.
