summary

The content of bFSH in human BPH tissues was tested. The material consisted of the tissue samples taken from 8 prostatic adenomas which were homogenized together, the homogenate centrifuged, (100 000 x G, 30 min., 4°C) and from the obtained tissue residue FSH, aFSH, bFSH were extracted with 0.1N formyltetrahydropteroylglutamic acid.
The extract was lyophilized. In the lyophylizate the contents of FSH, aFSH and bFSH was determined by radioimmunological methods and the concentration of FSH, aFSH and bFSH in 1 gram of tissue was calculated. The concentrations in BPH tissues wer as follows: for FSH — 62 mU/g of tissue, aFSH — 102 ng/g of tissue, bFSH — 189 ng/g of tissue.
The concentration of bFSH in the BPH tissue was much higher than that of aFSH which may point to the presence in the BPH tissue of free bFSH. The presence of bFSH in the BPH tissue may provid additional confirmation for the hypothesis that inhibine is involved in BPH pathogenesis in elderly males.
