summary

The analysis covered 118 patients with staghorn calculi treated surgically at the Department of Urology of the Medical Academy in Warsaw over the years 1986—1989. The patients were divided into 2 groups. Group I consisted of 55 patients operated in 1986 and 1987, that is before the ESWL method was introduced in our Department. Group II consisted of 63 patients who had surgery in 1988 and 1989, that is after introduction of ESWL. The effectiveness of surgical treatment assessed on the basis of radicality of operation is the same for both groups and its mean value is 49.3%. Application of ESWL as a \'Complementary treatment to surgery contributed to a Considerable improvement dn the final results of staghorn lithiasis treatment. The percentage of satisfactory results in group II was over 85.0%.
