summary

The results of genetic and biochemical studies confirmed the role of androgens in prostate cancer etiopathogenesis. In these group of patients a high frequency of polymorphism of genes responsible for androgen biosynthesis, transport and metabolism was demonstrated, as well as relationship between increased androgen activity and growth factors expression in neoplasm.
Epitestosterone is an endogenous antiandrogen which can substantially modulate androgen activity in man. In the prostatic gland the level of this steroid is particularly high (from 2 to 4 times higher in comparison of the testosterone level).
Recent results showed substantially lower epitestosterone levels in prostatic cancer patients when compared with healthy men. It can be suppose that lower endogenous androgen activity may have an important role in etiopathogenesis of carcinoma of the prostate.
