summary

Aim of study. The studies aimed at analysis of postnatal development of rat prostate in the 1st, 5th, 10th, 20th, 28th, 35th, 45th, and 59th days of life.
Material and methods. Histological sections of ventral prostate of rats in individual days of life (days 1 to 59) were stained with H+E (hematoxylin and eosin) and Mallory\'s techniques. The morphological patterns were examined using MuliiScan software. Height of glandular epithelium and proportions of the sublayer and of the glandular epithelium were estimated. Serum testosterone levels were established by the RIA technique.
Results. Results of the morphomelric and histologic studies demonstrated that the postnatal prostate development involved three consecutive stages. The stepwise development was reflected by parallel changes in serum testosterone levels.
Conclusions. The stepwise development of rat prostate involves three distinct stages (days 1-10, 20-28, 35-59). Histological pattern of ventral prostate in the rat already in the 20th day resembles that noted in sexually mature individuals.
