Vaporescction of the prostate (TUVRP) - a modification of classic transurethral resection of the prostate in the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy

Objectives. The aim of this study is to compare efficacy, safety, therapeutic durability an costs of endoscopic BPH treatment with
new method called transurethral vaporization of the prostate (eg. TUVRP), or with TURP. Material and method. The group of 70 palienls, aged from 50 to 87 years, was evaluated. They randomized into one of Ihe
following endoscopic procedures: TURP, TURVP or EVAP. After operation, blood Hb level and serum Na level were
evaluated and compared with pre-treatment values. During 1-year follow up, safety and durability of the treatment were
examined 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after treatment. We also compared costs of both procedures and clinical usefulness of the
vaporesection. Results. The efficacy of vaporesection were comparable with those of TURP. Mean blood during TUVRP was significantly lower
than during TURP (0,71 g% vs 1,35 g%, respectively), and between mean serum sodium level after treatment by each of
method was not statistically significant (3,61 mmol/l vs mmol/l, respectively). We observed a high percent of EVAP failure; for
that reason this was disontinued. Conclusions. Vaporesection of the prostate is a very efficacious and safe modification of TURP. One-year follow up showed a
durable therapeutic result, an a cost of both methods of the treatment was comparable. Vaporesection is recommended
especially in patients with medical disorders, as well as these who refuse classical operation
