summary

Objective. To establish selection criteria to irradiation in prostate can-
cer patients with bone metastases.
Material and methods. The results of palliative irradiation in 52 pa-
tients with Symptomatic bone metastases of prostate cancer are presen-
ted.
Patients and methods. 15 patients with single metastases (better prog-
nosis ? LR) received > 42 Gy with a conventional fractionated regimen.
37 patients with multiple metastases (worse prognosis ? GR) were irra-
diated with single dose or short-course schedules.
Results. The median duration for palliation was significantly greater
for the LR group as compared with the GR group (15 vs 8 months
? p = 0.02). The complete pain relief was observed in 11/15 (66%) pa-
tients of the LR group and in 13/37 (35%) patients of the GR group. The
significant difference was found between 23 patents with complete pain
relief and 17 patients with partial pain relief in terms of the duration for
palliation (11 vs 2 months - p = 0.0007).
Conclusion. The conventional fractionated irradiation is very effective
in patents with single bone metastases of prostate cancer.
