prostate carcinoma of the prostate ultrasonography TRUS

summary

Objective. The diagnostic value of transrectal Sonography (TRUS) in cancer of
the prostate was estimated.
Material and method. Echogenic characteristics of the prostate of 45 patients
with histologically confirmed carcinoma of the prostate were analyzed
retrospectively.
Results. Of all 45 ultrasound patterns, 29 (64.4%) were determined as suspicious
for carcinoma of the prostate whereas 16 (36.6%) were not estimated as
characteristic for the carcinoma. Of all 30 patients with positive digital rectal
examination of the prostate echogenic lesions were found in 83.3%. When only
a PSA test was positive echogenic lesions were found in only 26.5%.
Conclusion. Diagnosis of carcinoma of the prostate based only on TRUS is not
trustworthy. Exclusion of prostate malignancy based on solo TRUS should not be
done, especially when patients are DRE and/or PSA positive.
