summary

The concentration of total protein and its electrophoretic fractions was determined before treatment in 171 cases of prostatic carcinoma, 201 cases or prostatic adenoma, and 66 healthy men. The results before the treatment were compared with those in male patients in the same age range treated for gastric carcinoma, lung carcinoma and Hodgkin's disease. In 75 cases of prostatic carcinoma these values were repeatedly determined at intervals of 8?12 weeks.
The pattern of serum proteins in cases of prostatic carcinoma is a different one than that observed in other neoplasms. Its characteristiic feature is hypoalbu-minaemia related to the progression of the neoplasm, and a high level of alpha2-globulins, higher than in cases of other neoplasms. The changes ta plasma proteins are similar in prostatic carcinoma and an prostatic adenoma, but the intensity of hypoalbuminaemia was greater in carcinoma, and that of alphazglobulinaemia in adenoma. An important effect on the development of hypoalbuminaemia was not only a reduction of albumin level in the circulating plasma but also plasma dilution. A tendency for counteracting hypoalbuminaemia and for reduction of increased alpha2globulin level may be useful for the evaluatkin of successful treatment.
