summary

Some of the authors claim, that the preoperative risk factors, such as: age, increased creatinine and urea serum levels, limited circulatory and respiratory efficiency and diabetes mellitus are conducive to complications, both during and after transurethral electroresection of the prostatic adenoma (TURP). The aim of the investigation was to asses the influence of diabetes mellitus on the patients' post TURP course. The medical histories of the 111 successive patients with diabetes, who underwent the TURP, were subjected to a retrospective analysis (group A). The control group was composed of 50 patients without diabetes who underwent the same TURP operation for the same reasons (group B). The patients from both groups did not differ in terms of age, the size of prostatic adenoma, length of operation's time and the presence of the catheter before the surgical intervention. The significantly more frequent occurrence of the fever of 38°C or more was ascertained in the period subsequent to the operation in the group of patients with diabetes in comparison to the control group. Both, the total stay in the hospital as well as postoperative stay were definitely longer (p<0,001) in the group of patients with diabetes than in the group of patients without it: 16,9 ±6,8 and 9,2 ±5,6 days versus 9,2 ±3,4 and 3,9 ±1,7 days respectively.
