summary

Weight loss in patients with malignacies is a result of systemic and local effects of the neoplasm which cause changes in the supply of nutrients and in the reąuirements for them, and normal utilization of energy-yielding substrates and protein. Weight loss leads with time to cachexia and changes in the body composition which is stable in health. The knowledge of the causes of cachexia has opend the possibility of compensation for weight loss and trials of counteracting this process.
