summary

Objective. The most common cause of hydronephrosis in children is a pyelo-ureteric obstruction. The objective of the paper is the presentation of the experience in employing a videoscopic retroperitoneal approach with a patient in Ihe prone position.
Material and method. In the years 2001-2002, six children with pyelo-ureleric stenosis were treated at Deparlament of Pediatric Urology, Collegium Medicum. Jagiellonian University. Cracow. AH the patients have been followed-up postoperatively for over 6 months. In one patient a conversion to a classic procedure was necessitated by a segmental ureteral involving an over 5-cm long segment.
Results. The preliminary assessment of the outcome is promising. All the live patients subjected to a videoendoscopic reconstruction of the pyelo-ureleric junction have demonstrated improved emptying of the pyelocalyceal system.
Conclusions. The results are good and low-invasive techniques are more and more commonly and extensively employed in the treatment of congenital defects in children.
