summary

introduction
The aim of this study was to assess sexual activity in patients suffering from BPH who seek medical help due to LUTS.
material and methods
A total of 9835 among 10300 patients from 215 medical centers consulted by 200 urologists, were included in this study. Urologists have diagnosed BPH on the base of clinical examination. Each enrolled patient answered three self-assessment questions estimating their sexual activity.
results
In the 50-59 years age group 96,1% men are still sexual active although their activity decreases with age. In patients with retained sexual activity over 50% confirm harmful influence of BPH on their sexual functions. This negative influence also decreases with age. Similar results were obtained in the group of patients with waned sexual activity. For over 80% of sexually active men with BPH possible deterioration of sexual life is important and very important. For patients with decreased sexual activity possible deterioration of the sexual aspect of life does not play important role.
conclusions
Frequency of sexual dysfunctions in patients suffering from BPH increases with age. In patients with BPH below 59 years of age lack of sexual activity is rather uncommon. Over 80% patients with BPH, which are still sexually active, consider it very important aspect of life. Possible loss of sexual efficiency is obviously less important for men, who are no more sexually active.
