summary

Objective. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and alfafetoprotein (AFP) are
recognized neoplasmatic markers. Determination of its levels in blood serum
is useful in diagnostic and monitoring of some neoplasmatic processes. The
clinical usefulness of determination levels of these antigens in blood serum
and urine of patients with transitional cancer of the bladder is not very well-
known. In our study we determinated norms of these antigens levels in blood
serum and urine and we estimated the usefulness of determination these
values in patients with histologically confirmed transitional cancer of the
bladdder.
Material and method. For determination of normal CEA and AFP levels in
blood serum and urine we performed the laboratory examination in 225
healthy workers from Factory of Technical Bands PASAMON in Bydgoszcz
and 100 students from from University Medical School in Bydgoszcz. In this
way we determinated CEA norms in men and women which are 0-10 ng/ml
in blood serum and 0-42 ng/ml in urine. AFP norms in blood serum are 0-12
ng/ml in men and 0-21 ng/ml in women; in urine 0-13 ng/ml in men and 0-
8.9 ng/ml in women.
Results. In 163 patients we found elevated CEA levels in urine, what is
72% of all patients with bladder cancer. CEA levels in urine increase with the
increase of histological malignancy of the tumour. We did not find similar
interdependence in blood serum. Also AFP levels in blood serum and in urine
are usually normal. Our results confirm the usefulness of determination only
CEA levels in urine of patients with bladder cancer.
