kidney renal cell carcinoma supradiaphragmatic tumor thrombus treatment
summary
- Between 1980 and 1993, 215 patients were operated on for renal cell carcinoma in
- our department. Thrombectomy was performed in 43 patients, that is in 20%. In 9
- patients, that is 4.5% of the whole group, supradiaphragmatic tumor thrombus was
- removed. This group consisted of 5 women and 4 men, aged from 38 to 75 years,
- mean 56 years. Five patients had nodal and 3 patients distant metastases at the time of
- the diagnosis. All tumor thrombi were completely removed during radical surgery. Two
- patients died due to cardiovascular complications 5 and 17 days after operation. During
- the mean follow-up of 32 months (from 14 to 84 months) 4 patients died due to renal
- cancer. Three patients are still alive without symptoms of the neoplasm.
