summary

In the years 1976?1986 in the Urology Ward at Bielański Hospital 153 patients were treated because of the prostate cancer. In 36 patients (23,51%) it was an accidentally recognized cancer in the prostate, which makes 8,12% patients operated for a benign neoplasm in the prostate. Jewett ? Catalona classification was used to divide the patients in two groups: group Al ?6 patients (16,67%) and group A2 ? 30 patients (83,33o/o). Among the six patients in group Al the disease reappeared after nine years in one whereas in group A2 as many as 18 patients did not show symptoms of recurrence of the cancer process in spite of not applying any treatment. Of vital importance in qualifying a patient for a par-ticular method of treatment or a close clinical observation (without administering any drugs) is the degree of malignancy of an accidentally diagnosed cancer in the prostate.
