summary

Serum levels of AFP and hCG were determined in 145 patients before and serially after orchidectomy, and in 352 patients only after orchidectomy. Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection was performed in 127 patients with nonseminomatous germ cell tumours. A part of seminomas produced smali amounts of hCG. Out of nonseminomatous germ cell tumours, pure teratomas or teratomas with adrnixture of seminomatous elernents produced smali amounts of AFP and/or hCG, chorionic carcinoma produced a lot of hCG, yolk sac tumour ? a lot of AFP, and compound tumours synthesized a lot of AFP and/or hCG. Radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations as well as determinations of concentrations of both markers were parts of the diagnostic-therapeutic strategy: establishing diagnosis, determining progression, and monitoring treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy) and follow-up.
Determination of concentrations of both markers enabled early detection of recurrence in patients with nonseminomatous germ cell tumours.
